In
September 1997, Dr. Shunnar moved to Amman, Jordan to work at the Islamic
Hospital.
This hospital is run by a charity and is a teaching hospital affiliated
to the Medical School at the University of Jordan.
The
hospital has all the facilities including Spiral CT, MRI, DSA and a 12-bedded
ICU. There are 5 operating theatres and all main neurosurgical equipment is
provided including an operating microscope, an ultrasonic surgical aspirator (Dissectron)
in addition to microsurgical instruments and spinal instrumentation equipment.
The hospital treats patients from all over the Arab World.
Jordan
is privileged to be a centre of excellence in Medicine in the Middle East.
The ONLY Gamma knife centre serving the whole of the Middle East is based
in Amman.
Dr. Shunnar received formal training in Sweden in November 1998 and he is
treating patients with Stereotactic Radiosurgery in Amman .
In January 2000, he started his own private clinic in Amman.
This enables him to work in all private hospitals in Amman.
Approximately 50% of the work load comes from abroad and is a mix of 40%
cranial and 60% spinal problems.

was a Substantive Full Time Consultant Neurosurgeon appointment in the
Sub-Regional Neurosurgical unit in Plymouth.
This unit is staffed by 3 Consultant Neurosurgeons with a complement
of 3 Registrars two of which came on an annual basis from
Dr John Jane’s unit in Charlottesville, Virginia for training in
Plymouth. The unit serves a population of 1.6 million in the South West
of England. The total operative
load was around 1150 cases among which were 90 –100 vascular cases
(Aneurysms and AVMs) divided between the three consultants.
