Glycated albumin is a valuable tool, assessing average blood glucose levels over approximately a 20-day period. The concentration of glucose that binds non- enzymatically to albumin is proportional to the mean blood glucose level. The glycated protein formed is stable and remains in the body until the albumin is degraded. Glycated albumin levels provide a timely assessment of insulin dosage in diabetics and evaluation of glycemia in pregnancy. It should not, however, be used for the primary diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.
